TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – City officials from across the state gathered this week in Tallahassee to discuss the latest issues and developments affecting municipalities and how they are being addressed in Tallahassee during the current legislative session. These issues are all part of the Florida League of Cities 2015 legislative agenda.
This year’s priorities include reforming police and firefighter pension plans, addressing the taxation of communications services, ensuring local authorities retain the power to regulate municipal water infrastructure systems, reauthorization and improvement of the Enterprise Zone program, preserving local control of transportation planning and establishing minimum standards for sober home facilities.
“As a member of the Destin City Council, it is vital that I remain informed of pending legislation that affects our community. Meeting with members of the Florida House and Senate, including Senators Don Gaetz and Greg Evers and Representative Matt Gaetz, allows me to advocate for or lobby against pending bills while explaining and their potential impact on Destin and Okaloosa County,” noted Councilwoman Prebble Q Ramswell.
The events began Tuesday, March 17, with an opening luncheon and legislative briefing followed by meetings with lawmakers at the Capitol. Nearly 200 city officials, including more than 50 mayors, participated in Florida League of Cities 2015 Legislative Action Days.
“Local government officials know better than anyone how important it is for municipalities to be empowered to make decisions that are best for each unique community at the local level,” said Florida League of Cities President and Miramar Mayor Lori Moseley. “Bringing the voice of citizens from across the state to Tallahassee will provide valuable perspective to lawmakers as they consider issues that will impact our cities, towns and villages.”
In addition to meeting with state lawmakers, attendees will also hear from such speakers as Rep. Halsey Beshears, Rep. Bobby DuBose, Rep. Debbie Mayfield, Rep. George Moraitis, Rep. Mark Pafford, Rep. Kathleen Peters, Sen. Christopher Smith and Tallahassee Mayor Andrew Gillum. Ramswell, a member of the Senate Committee Florida is for Veterans, Inc., also met with officials the previous week on behalf of veterans and the drive to see Florida become the most-veteran friendly state in the US.
