City leaders received a phone call late in the afternoon on June 20th. The caller was City Manager Maryann Ustick tendering her resignation with 60 days notice as required per her contract. Ustick cited her desire to be back on the west coast near her family, especially her husband. As news quickly spread, a former manager’s name began to be passed around– Greg Kisela.
The council met in an emergency session on the 25th to discuss options, with several councilors citing conversations with Kisela, who noted his potential interest in returning to the city for which he served as City Manager from 2004-2011. Though I never had the opportunity to work with Kisela and have never met him, his reputation preceded him and everyone I contacted spoke very highly of his abilities. I called Kisela before our meeting and was impressed with his candor, stance, ideas, and desire to serve Destin. Further, his knowledge of our city makes him invaluable as any learning curve would be significantly shortened. As a result, I was on board with voting to pursue negotiations with Kisela to replace Ustick.
The council met again on June 30th to discuss further negotiations, approving a contract for Kisela. Council was notified on July 1 that Kisela had signed and returned the contract. Ustick has announced her acceptance of a position in Gallop, NM, and will leave her position here no later than August 19th. Kisela will take over upon Ustick's departure.
